I spotted this pair building a beautifull nest just as you walk over cuckoo bridge. The site seems a little public but lets hope that all goes well for them.

Great Crested Grebe Courtship Display Dance

It is that time of year again and today I was lucky enough to watch two Grebes engage in their mating courtship dance, after some mimicking of each other with lots of head bobbing and twisting, both birds then dived to the bottom of the pit to collect some weed as an offering – my wife prefers diamonds apparently… Once both birds had collected a suitable sample they proceeded to ‘rise and fall’ on the water rubbing necks and waiving their chosen greenery at each other. Sadly the birds were a way off and the sharpness of the pictures is a little lacking, but I hope you can get an idea of this super courtship dance.

Short Eared Owl

At first sight I have to confess to thinking this was 'another Barn owl' as two were already hunting in the field I was laying down in - the things I do to get a picture...
A closer view gave me the realisation that this was a little different... Yellow Eyes, black beak darker plumage... This Short Eared Owl is the first I have caught on camera and the pictures were taken @ 2 miles from Roswell on the A142 (behind my house!) where the birds can be clearly seen hunting from @ 4pm each day. - I hope to be able to improve in the images over time, but for now I'm just happy to have one in the can - so to speak!
If you would like to see the birds, let me know I will be happy to give directions. - The birds can be clearly watched from the roadside with no intrusion on the bird's privacy.

PS. Thanks for the heads up from Roswell fans on the Egrets, but alas the morning I visited it was too dark to get a usable picture and the birds were too far away; fingers x'd I may get a lucky break soon. Coincidently I have seen single Egrets in the fields to the rear and front of my house, which just goes to show that we need to protect as many diverse local places as we can from development; clealrly these birds need a tapestry of habitats that are interlinked and able to provide hunting, roosting and breading sites.

Short Eared Owl,
